Four-piece alternative rock band, Wolf Alice, have transformed the music scene in their years in the limelight. After their sophomore album, Visions of a Life, saw them winning the Mercury Prize, the quartet have smashed expectations with their long awaited comeback track ‘The Last Man on Earth’.

Bare vocals accompanied with only a dreamy piano flow through the opening half of ‘The Last Man on Earth’, creating an invigorating callout to the casual arrogance of humanity. The elegance of this melody is a refreshing change of pace from the opening release from award-winning Visions of a Life, Yuk Foo. The track takes you on a journey of self-discovery through the classically magical Wolf Alice harmonies.

With a soothing track that embodies (and normalises) existentialism, the long awaited return of 2018 Mercury Prize winners couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Following the darkest year in recent times due to the pandemic, this song is a symbol of progress. Many developed a deep understanding of themselves after spending months reflecting behind closed doors — and this is the perfect soundtrack as we move towards our new normality.

The erudite songwriting enables listeners to relate to the song, whilst it also makes the clear point of criticising exactly that: “every book you take and dust off from the shelf/has lines between lines between lines that you read about yourself”. The enchanting song explodes into a drop where the beat provides a strong pulse, encouraging the sentiment of eclectic emancipation.

The feel-good track is oozing with a sense of freedom, the album is set to be the soundtrack to what many are hoping will be a summer to remember. The track is released alongside the announcement of their third album, Blue Weekend — due for release on June 11th, just ten days before lockdown legislation is set to end in England. Lead vocalist Ellie Rowsell described the upcoming album as for others, to make listeners feel better, or make them feel seen.

Blue Weekend and The Last Man on Earth mark the continuous growth in popularity and the ethereal talents of the group, and it signals even more great things that are to come from them this year. Watch the music video for ‘The Last Man on Earth’ here.
